About

With a sound that has stirred much excitement, Secondhand Heart’s recent shows have shown a maturity and new complexity in their songwriting and have been recognised by peers as emerging artists showing a unique insight into a musical experience that draws you in with vibrant colours, flavours and consciousness, and leaves you hungry for more.

Secondhand Heart is a Melbourne based band whose members hail from the coastal wonderland of Lorne and the regional music Mecca of Ballarat. Retaining their iconic lush harmonies Secondhand Heart have created a new sound of blues infused, euphoric pop/rock with songs that unfold through fervent builds, tension and release.

Jess Carroll’s songwriting is deeply personal and reflects on universal questions of love, life and loss. These topics are unpacked and explored by thoughtful, tender lyrics and realised through powerful vocal harmonies between Jess and Lily.  John Waller compounds this passion with his intense guitar stylings supported by the stoic rhythm of bassist Michael and drummer Chris.  Before you know it they have taken you on an emotional musical journey with them, their music transcending musical boundaries to form a stylistic smorgasboard that incorporates folk, rock, blues & roots.

Triple J Producer Amelia Chapelow '[Trouble] is really heart and soul stuff... that slow wind down and then wind up section to the end is so heartfelt and just beautiful!'

Inpress  'Oh Secondhand Heart what a soothing wash of sounds you supply! Jess Carroll’s and Lily Parker’s harmonies perfectly complement elongated strings and piano accompaniment

Faster Louder - 'The band's bittersweet balladry ignites beautifully, erupting to convey a powerful anguish... Their craft conceals qualities undeniably charming: Lily Parker and Jess Carroll leading from the front with charisma. The tandem act between the frontwomen works wonderfully, and plays a large part in the band's appeal' '

AU review   'Second Hand Heart write moving, integral music that is breathtakingly intimate and beautifully arranged. They have a versatile sound that is vibrant and intense and their self-titled EP is engaging, sensory bliss'

Deaf Ambitions '"Sweet Little Nothings" is a seductive, blues-rock jam, complete with shady guitars and a thumping rhythm… early Abbe May and Big Scary both come to mind

Vulture Magazine - "Jess and her fellow vocalist, Lily, provide the kind of gorgeous warbles associated with Sarah Blasko. The lyrics are hushed and fine and they compliment the guitar chords like a sexy breeze"

Milkbar Mag – “‘Sweet Little Nothings’ is doom blues, the kind that started off strong in the early naughties with The Black Keys, The White Stripes…even The Datsuns. Guitars go on spiritual journeys down desert highways, tambourines rattle like snakes, and drumkits go marching off jagged cliffs. You’re in flavour country, and it’s a big country”
